Dumfries High School

As part of Dumfries & Galloway Council’s major investment in modern education infrastructure, the new £53 million Dumfries High School will replace the existing 1960s building with a state-of-the-art learning environment designed around sustainability, energy efficiency, and wellbeing.

Delivered by Morgan Sindall Construction with Castle Building Services as MEP contractor, the new campus will feature BREEAM “Excellent” design principles, cutting-edge technology, and low-carbon systems to support long-term operational efficiency.

The Challenge

For BSB Engineering, this presented an opportunity to support a new client on an ambitious, future-focused project — providing reliable, compliant fire and smoke control solutions integral to the safety and sustainability of the new facility.

The Solution

BSB Engineering worked closely with Castle Building Services to supply fully integrated fire and smoke control solutions tailored for the school’s multi-block layout — including teaching and sports facilities.

Products Supplied:

• FSD-C Series – Circular Motorised Fire Dampers
  Used across both the Sports Block and Teaching Block, these galvanised single-blade dampers ES rated Fire dampers are fitted with PML230-TF 230V spring-return actuators, providing reliable smoke containment and compartmentation within vertical risers and service routes.
• FSD-TD Series – Rectangular Motorised Fire Dampers
  Supplied in multiple sizes to suit varied ductwork configurations, these galvanised ES rated motorised Fire dampers ensure quick installation and consistent performance throughout the building.
• Control & Monitoring Systems
  – EM20-230 Electro-Mechanical Control Panel for up to 20 dampers
  – PM230-TF / PML230-TF Actuators for both circular and rectangular dampers
• On-site Commissioning Service to test, and verify all control panel functions, ensuring compliance from installation to operation.

The Result

Although construction is ongoing, the project has already reached key milestones, with structural works completed and internal fit-out progressing across the new campus. Once complete, the new Dumfries High School will provide students and staff with a modern, energy-efficient, and safe learning environment, fully aligned with Scotland’s net-zero and sustainability objectives.
