Hull
Project Overview
Name: Hull Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC)
Location: Albion Square / Albion Street, Hull
Client: University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust / NHS Humber & East Riding region
Main Contractor: Vinci Construction
M&E Contractor: HEB Mechanical & Electrical (part of HEB Group)
Project Value: ~£3.4 million (M&E scope)
Facility Cost / Funding: ~£18 million total facility cost (with NHS / Govt & local match funding)
Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust commissioned a new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Albion Square, as part of the NHS’s nationwide programme to improve access to early diagnostic testing.
Delivered by Vinci Construction with HEB Mechanical & Electrical responsible for the full M&E package, the £18 million facility is designed to provide MRI, CT, X-ray and ultrasound services — helping deliver up to 150,000 additional patient appointments each year.
The project demanded a robust, compliant and efficient fire and smoke control solution that would safeguard patients and staff, integrate seamlessly with the building’s BMS, and meet the stringent standards set out under healthcare (HTM) guidance.
BSB’s challenge was to deliver this within a tight construction programme while supporting HEB’s on-site coordination and sustainability goals.
The Solution
Working closely with HEB Mechanical & Electrical, BSB Engineering Services designed, manufactured and commissioned a tailored fire and smoke damper package to protect critical ventilation systems throughout the building.
Our solution comprised:
All dampers were manufactured at BSB’s Kent facility, palletised by floor and delivered to site in coordination with HEB’s installation programme — supporting efficient logistics and reducing environmental impact through local production and reduced transport distances.
The Hull Community Diagnostic Centre now benefits from a fully integrated, life-safety compliant damper control system that safeguards patients, staff and essential healthcare operations and protects the building in accordance with the design & cause & effect strategy
BSB’s contribution helped ensure the facility meets NHS performance and sustainability objectives while delivering the highest levels of fire safety and energy efficiency.
Now open to patients, Hull CDC plays a vital role in the region’s healthcare infrastructure — improving access to diagnostic services and reducing pressure on local hospitals.
For BSB, the project highlights our continued ability to deliver precision-engineered passive fire protection solutions with its fire dampers and control systems for complex, safety-critical environments — ensuring compliance, reliability and peace of mind where it matters most.
