Project

Arrowe Park Hospital

Project Overview

Arrowe Park Hospital in Wirral has undergone its largest redevelopment since opening in 1982, with a major investment into a new Urgent and Emergency Care facility designed to improve emergency treatment capacity and patient flow across the site.

Delivered for Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the £28m development introduced a new single-entry urgent and emergency care model, improving ambulance access, patient assessment and clinical efficiency. The project included an advanced resuscitation area, specialist treatment spaces and upgraded staff facilities to support both patient care and operational performance.

The development was led by DAY Architectural as Architect and Lead Consultant, with Sutcliffe providing structural and civil engineering services. Tilbury Douglas acted as main contractor alongside specialist HVAC contractor Athertons.

BSB Engineering Services supported the project with a complete fire safety package with addressable control system designed to integrate with the building’s wider life safety strategy.

The Challenge

Healthcare environments place significant demands on fire safety systems. Fire and smoke control measures must integrate reliably with complex building services while remaining accessible, compliant and straightforward to maintain.

At Arrowe Park Hospital, the new emergency care facility introduced upgraded treatment areas, new patient pathways and 24-hour operational requirements within a live healthcare environment. The fire and smoke strategy needed to support compartmentation requirements without adding unnecessary complexity to installation, controls or future maintenance.

Coordination across multiple trades, phased commissioning and restricted access areas also formed part of the delivery challenge throughout the programme.

The Solution

BSB Engineering Services supplied a complete fire damper and smoke control package for the new facility, including motorised fire dampers, addressable damper modules and an ACP50 addressable control panel capable of monitoring and controlling up to 50 dampers on a single network.

The project included:

  • 33 FSD-TD motorised fire dampers
  • 6 FSD-C single blade fire and dampers
  • 33 ADM24 addressable damper modules
  • 1 ACP50 addressable fire and smoke damper control panel
  • 1 ACP PSU50-24 power supply panel
  • 33 PM24-TF actuators
  • 6 PML24-TF actuators

The system was designed around 24V AC/DC actuators with thermal fuse protection and integrated monitoring capability, supporting both fire safety compliance and ongoing operational visibility.

Alongside product supply, BSB Engineering Services provided specification support throughout the project, assisting with damper selection, installation methods, actuator coordination and control integration requirements. The package also included commissioning support to help streamline final system setup and handover.

The Result

The completed facility represents the most significant investment at Arrowe Park Hospital in more than 40 years, delivering improved emergency treatment capacity, enhanced resuscitation facilities and a more efficient experience for both patients and clinical teams.

For complex healthcare developments, coordinated fire damper and smoke control systems play an important role in supporting compliant compartmentation and long-term operational resilience.

Arrowe Park Hospital is another example of BSB Engineering Services supporting healthcare projects with integrated damper systems, controls and commissioning designed for demanding building environments.
